Chapter 9

The Investigation Continues

Declan sat across the table from Rick who kept running his hands through his short blond hair, still damp from his morning shower. His light blue eyes were focused on the papers in front of him. It had taken Declan and the people of the island some time to accept Rick in his role as Police Chief. His looks were more movie star than police officer, but he soon convinced them his mind was always on his work. Rick took little notice of his own appearance.

He was upset today as he closed the file and slammed it down on his desk. “Declan, I have scanned through all the information on Marlene’s case ten times.” He sighed in frustration. “We know little more than when we started the investigation. The sketch artist finished his job and the fliers are out, but Marlene is still in some sort of shock, and no one else has come forward with any useful information. Nothing helpful has turned up from the second search in the woods. Hair and fibers from the area are still being analyzed in Atlanta.”

Arlan arrived with a bakery box and set it down by the coffee pot in the front of the office. Rick waved him back to review everything one more time.

Arlan picked up the donuts and passed around the box before taking his seat. “I was thinking maybe old Gus could have a go at the woods to see what he might find, what ya think?” Arlan sipped at his coffee then pulled out a chocolate donut with sprinkles. Rick cringed.

“I don’t have any money in the budget for it, but maybe we can take a little out of the supply budget. At this point, I am desperate for anything that might lead anywhere.” Rick picked out the least lethal-looking donut, a plain one with a little cinnamon.

“I’ll call him now and see if he’ll go with us after lunch. I’ll see how much he wants for his time. The guy is better than two teams of tracking dogs.” Arlan got up, taking the box of donuts with him.

“Something is just not right here…something is ringing that little alarm bell in my brain, but I can’t figure out what it is.” Rick unfolded his long legs, stood, and stretched.

Declan picked up on Rick’s frustration as he walked over and touched the flier on the bulletin board that the sketch artist had drawn. He put his finger on the face of the drawing as if he could get a reading with his touch. He studied the face in detail, but that was just one person’s quick recall of someone who had been near Marlene, and it might mean nothing at all. He could understand Rick’s frustration.

“Let’s go back to the hospital, Declan. I know Marlene has something she’s holding back, and that will be the key to all this. Do you have time?”

“I have about an hour before my first patient. You’ll need to drop me off to save time.
